    India Gazette
    Friday 10th September, 2010

A policeman in the Indian state of Gujarat has received a life term for burning alive a man who had accused him of extorting money from a bootlegger.

Constable Haribhai Patel was sentenced to life imprisonment and also ordered him to pay compensation to the wife of the victim.

The court heard that the policeman killed Hasmukh Parmar, 35, who had asked him not to extort money from the bootlegger.

The enraged policeman struck Parmar and then doused him with kerosene before striking a match.
