UPA has fulfilled its commitment, says Congress
    India Gazette
    Tuesday 9th March, 2010
    (IANS)

The Congress Tuesday said the party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has fulfilled its commitment to the people as the women's reservation bill was put to vote in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress MP Jayanthi Natarajan said: 'No other party (has) had the courage to deliver the promise (of reservation of legislative seats for women) to the people of India.'

The women's quota bill seeks to 33 percent seats for women in all legislatures.

Referring to criticism of the government's floor-management Monday after attempts to pass the bill did not succeed amid stiff opposition from some regional parties, Natarajan said the party stood vindicated.

She said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had never lagged behind in supporting measures for women's empowerment.

She said that 50 lakh women were holding positions in local bodies in the country due to measures adopted by the government.
