COLLEGE BASEBALL

COCOA, Fla. - Hagerstown Community College split two games on its southern swing at the Cocoa Expo on Sunday. In their opener, the Hawks lost to Yukon Avery Point 9-6 and then came back to down Ontario Blue Jays, 13-4.

Kyle Mallow had a pair of doubles and one triple and six RBI to lead HCC (6-1) in the victory and Trevor Cobb added three hits. Chad Lorson picked up the win with five innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine.

In the loss, Matt Murray and Chad Schlegel each had three hits and Matt Ridenour and Kyle Robinson each had two.


COLLEGE SOFTBALL

HCC eliminated in semis

LaPLATA, Md. - Casey Woods tossed a complete game shutout and Jess Stough hit a three-run homer and a two-run single to lead Hagerstown Community College past Ocean Community College in the quarterfinals of the College of Southern Maryland Invitational on Sunday.

HCC (2-3) was held to two hits and eliminated by Pitt Community College 7-0 in the semifinals.

Against Ocean, Adrienne Munoz went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Megan Riggleman added three hits and drive in a run.

VanBrakle does it again

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Chambersburg graduate Stephanie VanBrakle tossed her second no-hitter of the year and fourth of her career as Alabama defeated South Carolina on Sunday, 8-0.

VanBrakle struck out seven and allowed only two baserunners.


RUNNING

Spinnler wins in Baltimore

BALTIMORE - Maria Spinnler, 44, successfuly defended her title in the St. Patrick's Day Shamrock 5K race on Sunday.

The Hagerstown runner won the Masters title with a time of 18:49.


AUTO RACING

Speedway washed out

Rain washed out Sunday's race program at Hagerstown Speedway.

This week's program will feature the Octoberfest 350 qualifiers in small blocks and late models.
