Lamar Grad Fair March 22-23 prepares May graduates

3/9/2006
First comes spring break, then comes graduation. May 2006 graduates are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel as their last semester comes to a close. With loans to be paid off, caps and gowns to be bought, and job opportunities ready to be snatched up, Lamar wants to help its graduating class.

Grad Fair ’06, “Imagine Graduation,” is ready to accommodate students and let them take care of all their graduation needs at one time. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily in the Setzer Student Center Ballroom.

Students graduating May 13 will be able to apply and pay for graduation, join the alumni organization, discover job opportunities through the career center, purchase caps and gowns, order invitations and class rings, receive important financial aid information and talk with graduate admissions about continuing education.

Because grad fair is a campus wide effort, students will be able to talk with records staff, career services, financial aid, graduate admissions and the office of alumni affairs. The LU bookstore and its venders will also be there, along with Image Specialists, the official graduation photography service.

“Image Specialists will offer a 10 percent discount to grads,” said Tuyet Tran, graduation coordinator, “to have their picture taken as they walk across the stage at the ceremony.”

The registrar’s office must receive the degree plan from prospective graduates’ departments before they can apply for graduation at Grad Fair.

“This is such a good opportunity for graduates,” said Tran, “because instead of them going to each separate department to prepare for graduation, it’s like a one-stop shop for them.”

Additional information on Grad Fair ’06 is available from Phyllis York, assistant registrar, at (409) 880-8968.
