High winds cause National Grid outages

The Business Review (Albany)

About 10,000 National Grid customers in the greater Albany, N.Y., region lost power Friday morning as heavy winds began to move into the region.

The bulk of the customers effected were in Amsterdam, Clifton Park and Troy, according to National Grid spokesman Steve Brady. The number of customers without service was expected to change throughout the day as winds continued to down trees and knock out power lines, while crews made repairs, he said.

There is a good chance that some customers will experience power losses through Saturday morning, he said.

At 11 a.m. Albany International Airport reported winds in excess of 63 miles per hour, enough to halt operations at the airport for an hour.

Across the state almost 94,000 National Grid customers were without power Friday morning as the storm moved from west to east. The hardest hit region of the state appeared to be the Syracuse area, Brady said.
