United Way hits halfway mark to '06 goal

The United Way of Greater St. Louis said Monday that it is halfway to its 2006 campaign goal of $66 million.
To date, the nonprofit has raised $33.3 million, or 50.4 percent, of its goal. Among the 2,500 companies in the St. Louis region running United Way campaigns, 77 Missouri companies and 31 Illinois companies are first timers, according to a release.
Some of the first-time companies participating in the campaign include Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc. (NYSE: BBW); Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. (Nasdaq: ISLE); Cargill Foods; the city of Sparta, Ill.; Luhr Bros. Inc.; and Schlafly Beer.
The United Way of Greater St. Louis contributes to 200 health and human service agencies in the bistate region. Those organizations serve 1 million residents in 16 counties.
