Calgon Carbon to cut 30 jobs
Pittsburgh Business Times - by Dan Reynolds
Calgon Carbon Corp. announced late Monday that it will be terminating 30 positions nationally in the third quarter in an effort to gain greater profitability in its core carbon filtration business.
Gail Gerono, a spokeswoman for the company, said the job cuts will be in sales and marketing, research and development and business development. She said 20 of the job cuts will occur in the Pittsburgh-area offices. She said the majority of those employees in positions that are being eliminated have been informed of the pending cuts.
The Robinson Township-based company reported that its hopes to save $3.3 million annually as a result of the job reductions.
In second quarter results, the company reported a 3.7-percent increase in net sales, to $80.5 million from $77.7 million. The company doubled its net income for the period, racking up profit of $3.9 million for the quarter ending June 30, compared to $1.9 million for the same period in 2005.
Calgon Carbon continues to be impacted by high legal costs as it seeks to defend a water purification patent in a federal court in New Jersey. The company's selling, administrative and legal expenses in the second quarter were $17.6 million compared to $15.2 million for the second quarter of 2005. Of that total, the company bore legal bills of $3.4 million in the second quarter, compared to $1.5 million in the second quarter of 2005.
Calgon Carbon is fighting other companies that are challenging its patent for using ultraviolet light to prevent infection from cryptosporidium in drinking water. Use of the light scrambles the DNA of the parasite, stopping it from reproducing.
