NEW ORLEANS (AP) - More than 11,000 people cast their ballots early in the runoff for mayor that pits Mayor Ray Nagin against Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu. The majority of early voters -- 7,488 -- cast their ballots in Orleans Parish.
As in the primary, residents scattered around the country by Hurricane Katrina were allowed to vote all week at satellite voting centers in Lake Charles, Shreveport, New Orleans and seven other cities around the state.
A final tally from the Secretary of State's Office said 11,534 people had voted by the close of early voting, which began Monday and ended Saturday. The highest number of voters outside New Orleans was in East Baton Rouge Parish, where 1,543 people cast their ballots.
A more detailed breakdown of voters was not available as of Saturday, but the numbers are close to those recorded in the primary, when 10,585 voters cast early ballots overall, the most coming from Orleans Parish. The rest of New Orleans' registered voters will be able to select their next mayor Saturday, May 20th.
