Don't take plastic surgery lightly. It may be cosmetic, but it is still surgery. If you don't do your homework, you could go from the operating room to a courtroom.
Last year, more than 9 million Americans had plastic surgery. Many picked the wrong surgeon, often out of confusion. Dermatologists, gynecologists, ophthalmologists and even dentists are performing plastic surgery.Nerve injuries, bad stitches, dying skin, post-op bleeding, staph infections and worse -- sloppy work by sloppy or unqualified physiciansHow do you find a surgeon? Experts say there is a checklist.Dr. Fred Heckler, Allegheny General Hospital: "You'd like to know that the individual you're going to be seeing in consultation has basic training and credentials, a full residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery."An important point: There are 120 boards in this country. Most have nothing to do with excellence.Experts say beware of physicians who are "board-certified" but not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).For example: The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not recognized by ABMS. In fact, the only board that is recognized is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. That's just the beginning.Eight years ago, Carolyn Reck wanted some of the years removed from her face.Reck, face lift patient: "Looking in the mirror, I looked tired all the time. My eyes looked tired, and I wasn't. I was awake, but they looked tired."She did her homework. She asked friends who had plastic surgery for names, got second opinions, consulted four surgeons, saw their degrees, where they went to school, talked to their patients and checked reputations before choosing Heckler.Reck: "Very professional, and I was very impressed with his work."When the patient is happy, that's a good sign.Experts say anyone considering plastic surgery should remember that it is surgery, just like surgery for cancer and trauma. Mistakes can be made, even by the most qualified. You do your homework to minimize the chance of those mistakes.
