Chris Thater Criterium 2003 by Tim Tobbe Published: 08/30/2003 Photos: Slideshow of Images Lots of pressure on the ole Maxxis guys this year, as we had to try and defend the title from last year’s victory. The scene was set for a good year as we had opened the legs up on Saturday by riding in a very brisk 30+ race and the weather was once again more than cooperating by being sunny and not crazy humid out. The race started quite sane, with a nice brisk pace being set at the front. Maxxis was well represented at the front with guys like Shep, Hanlon, Hahn keeping things in check. One of the first break attempts included Shep and Brian Hahn along with a couple other dudes. Fairly early in the race, Shep bridged up to a strong Handlebars guy (Klinshaw), but the pack would have none of that and it was short lived. We missed the first couple of Prime opportunities. After the missed opportunities, Rob Hanlon was able to work his way up and grind a $50 prime away from the sprinter types!! The middle of the race did not seem overly fast, but there were various attacks – most of which were brought back within a lap or so. Steve, Dan and I were staying in the front, but not doing too much work as of the race half way mark. Brian Thompson made his presence known at the front a few times throughout the race and closed down some gaps. Unfortunately, corner 4 got the better of Bri somewhere around mid-race. During the second 1/2 of the race, unfortunately many of our guys were shuffled to the back or out of the race – Thater tends to do that to ya. Looking back, we should have not been quite so active in the beginning of the race. Steve, Dan and I were left to tend with many late races moves. I put in a particularly hard effort to go across to two guys around 15 to go on a prime lap in which Dan Kane didn’t let my effort go in vain by taking his 2nd prime of the day. This is where we went terribly wrong, I shuffled back around 11 to go to sit in for a few laps and prepare for the end of the race. Of course, while we were inattentive at the front, others capitalized on this and a four man break transpired at ~ 7 laps to go [what were we thinking !?!]. The break included Klinshaw from the Handlebars team, among others. The pack was semi chasing and we waited… The break lost one rider and I thought it should come back. However, the guys in the break really wanted it, and they continued to work well together and stuck it! With 3 to go I decided I had to look out for Steve’s interest in defending the title and try to ramp the field up. I spent a great deal of energy without much progress. Then Steve, in a last ditch effort to win – went all out for 1 and 3/4 laps!! This was a very sick effort in which he held off a crazed field for the entire time. I was only able to hang on for 10th place (I hope due to the effort with 3 to go) while Steve was just behind me for 12th. Gotta give it up to Klinshaw for the win and the breakaway dudes for making it stick – well deserved. I think the Maxxis team learned some lessons out there this year…
