US doesn't rule out a strike against Iran

WASHINGTON: Republican and Democratic senators said on Sunday the US may ultimately have to undertake a military strike to deter Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but that should be the last resort.

"That is the last option. Everything else has to be exhausted. But to say under no circumstances would we exercise a military option, that would be crazy," Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said on CBS's 'Face the Nation.'

Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Illinois, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said there are sensitive elements of Iran's nuclear programme, which, if attacked, "would dramatically delay it's development."

"But that should not be an option at this point. We ought to use everything else possible keep from getting to that juncture," he said on CNN's 'Late Edition.'
