Bear Mountain Race Preview Published: 05/09/2006 DOWNSTATE NEW YORK REGION RACE PREVIEW
Riders Tackle A Climb at Bear Mtn.This course has seen been the site of district and national championships and is one of the best all-around road courses in the country. The course heads away from the start into a long-downhill, where racers often exceed 50mph. The downhill ends with a left U-turn, which is followed by the principal, multi-step climb up Tiorati Brook Road. Once over the top, riders head across a series of rollers and downhill into a traffic circle that leads them left again, this time on the beautiful Seven Lakes Drive. That road includes a series of rolling and fast riding, and another two traffic circle before riders get to the final stretch on the Lake Welch Parkway. Bear Mountain Course Profile.
Profile peaks are exaggerated. The Lake Welch Parkway starts with short, hard climb that used to serve as a feed zone (but no longer) and then rolls several miles into the finish. That hill, and the current feed zone about a mile before the finish, would be good places to watch the race, though car parking is not permitted along roads in the park (only in several parking lots around the course). The last several miles are flat with a little very shallow descending and slightly more shallow climbing. The finishing stretch is straight and slightly downhill. Bear Mountain Course Map.
