UD to open $3.2M tech institute

The University of Dayton is launching a $3.2 million institute that could help quicken development of a technology used to search for terrorists.
UD announced Monday it is working with the U.S. Air Force and area businesses to launch The Ladar and Optical Communications Institute. The institute will be dedicated to ladar technology and will bring together the region's ladar researchers.
Ladar, or laser detection and ranging, is similar to radar, except it typically uses infrared lasers instead of radio waves to detect targets. Ladar images can show details that are less than a foot in size on the ground, said Joe Haus, the institute's director.
Twenty-two instructors from UD and the Air Force Institute of Technology will teach in the program, which UD believes to be the first laser radar program in the country.
Students will perform research on campus and at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
The institute will be guided by a board that includes representatives from UD, the Air Force and NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.
ITT, L3 Cincinnati Electronics, Northrup-Grumman, Scrico and Textron Systems are partners of the institute.
